Salary & Benefits
Salary
Our residents are employed by the Oregon Health & Science University system. Salary is determined by the OHSU department of Graduate Medical Education.
The salary range for 2011-2012 is
$48,900,
$51,300
$53,900
Insurance
Our residents have funds from OHSU added to their pay cover the cost of insurance coverage sponsored by the university. OHSU's benefit package is referred to as UniversityFlex and allows each resident the freedom to choose from a variety of medical, dental, disability, and life insurance options. The package also includes a dependent care flexible spending account and healthcare flexible spending account. Residents are required to have medical and dental insurance, whether they are provided by OHSU or through a separate group plan. In addition, all residents/fellows are provided with $25,000 in life insurance coverage at no cost to them.
Residents also receive professional liability insurance, which covers all duties and acts performed within the scope of the training program.
Retirement
OHSU also provides residents an opportunity to participate in a limited retirement plan on a voluntary basis (no employer contribution). Residents can invest up to 20% of their salary or $10,000 per year, whichever is less, in tax-deferred annuities and mutual funds.
Time Off
Residents have 3 weeks of vacation per academic year, which can be taken in one week blocks of time. Due to Residency Review Committee guidelines and program requirements, there are limits to when residents may take vacation. Residents accrue 3 weeks of sick time annually, which is cumulative throughout the term of service.
An additional week of CME time is also available during second and third years.
The Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Oregon Family Leave Act (OFLA) are laws that protect your employment status while time is taken for maternity/paternity responsibilities or to care for a family member. FMLA provides 12 weeks of protected leave with benefits after 12 months of employment. OFLA provides 12 weeks of protected leave after 6 months of employment with benefits covered until paid leave is exhausted.
Stipends
Second and third year residents enjoy $1,000 per academic year to apply towards conference expenses, books, or other educational purposes. Registration fees associated with courses such as ACLS, ALSO, NRP, PALS and USMLE exams are covered by the program. Application for state licensure is covered. The program covers the cost of California medical licenses for two residents per year who will are interested in staffing clinics in California where Cascades East service is provided.
Resources
Residents are provided with lab coats, business cards, pagers, use of on-call rooms, meal tickets and daily lunches during noon conference. All residents receive a PDA with telephone capability and a laptop as an intern. Residents can access patient records from off-site, which can be a huge help when taking call from home as second and third years. Inpatient records, vitals, labs and reports are available via wireless access.
Electronic medical resources are widely used, and we offer UpToDate (a comprehensive evidence-based clinical information resource) and MD Consult on each computer in the clinic and hospital. Through our connection with OHSU, we also offer free access to OHSU's medical library, Ovid Medline, numerous electronic journals, Cochrane Databases, ACP Journal Club and more. The program provides residents with membership to the AAFP and/or the AOA.
Parking at Sky Lakes Medical Center and Cascades East is free. This, in and of itself, can represent a substantial savings over some university programs. Our residents earn the same salary as residents at OHSU in Portland, but have a much lower cost of living which helps to stretch a resident's salary.
Many housing opportunities exist, both to rent and to buy. Most residents pay $500-700 per month for rent. More than half of our residents end up buying homes during their residency. Most live within blocks, but some live "in the country" and have commute times of 5 to 10 minutes.
Each fall, we sponsor a working retreat at a local mountain resort to address residency, clinic and training issues. This is also when we take the ABFM In-Training exam. We also have a number of social outings including an annual Mt. McLaughlin climb, white water rafting trip, a proposed winter ski trip and numerous picnics/events to welcome new residents in the summer.
Moonlighting
There are many opportunities to moonlight in Klamath Falls and in the surrounding communities for residents that meet moonlighting requirements. These include urgent care centers in Klamath and a local Federally Qualified Health Center. Additionally, communities within three hours of Klamath have hired residents to cover weekend shifts. The salary generally is $60 to $75 per hour.
