Rob is originally from Canada where he was previously the director at the Grey Nuns Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Alberta. He is the team physician for the local OIT college teams. His extensive medical interests include postgraduate medical education, preventive health, sports medicine and evidence-based medicine. His sports medicine experience includes numerous personal orthopedic injuries while pursuing his love of downhill and cross-country skiing, mountain biking and almost any outdoor activity. You may see him driving around in his Mustang convertible with SpongeBob SquarePants seat-covers.

After briefly leaving for college in California, Joyce decided to drag her husband to Oregon and vowed to never again leave. She completed medical school at OHSU and residency here at Cascades East. She and her husband loved Klamath Falls so much that they decided to stay put and she became faculty. Joyce loves to travel but finds it hard to leave her 50 sheep, 2 horses, 3 dogs, 10 chickens and family.
Joyce's medical interests include geriatrics and end-of-life care, and she is frequently found harassing the residents about advanced directives and code status. She is Medical Director of a local hospice and is an active member of the hospital Ethics Committee. She especially enjoys spending time at her ranch with her family amongst their numerous animals.

After a tour with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam, Jim went to medical school at George Washington University and did his Family Medicine residency in Madison, Wisconsin. After his training he worked for the Indian Health Service in Fort Hall, Idaho. He moved from Idaho to Washington, D.C., where he was a full-time faculty member at Georgetown University School of Medicine. In 1992, Jim moved to Klamath Falls as the first director of the Cascades East Rural Family Medicine Residency.
Dr. Calvert still has a busy practice and is actively involved in teaching. He is principle investigator along with a neurologist from Oregon Health & Science University in a study of Klamath Falls residents over the age of 85 that looks at factors protecting the elderly from dementia. Jim is interested in politics and ran (unsuccessfully) for the Oregon legislature last year. He is involved in numerous medical and non-medical organizations. He is married to a family physician in private practice and has five children. He raises chickens and is interested in gardening.

Larry is originally from Los Angeles, where he was a partner in a private group practice for 10 years. He later moved to Chiloquin, OR to work first for a federally qualified health center for four years and later a solo private practice in the same small town. Since finishing training, he has participated in post-graduate medical education as community faculty at two Residency programs. In August 2006, he became full time faculty at Cascades East.
Larry hopes to bring some of his private practice, rural family medicine "nuts and bolts" perspective to the teaching experience at Cascades East Family Medicine Residency Program. He is particularly interested in Type 2 Diabetes. His real-life interests include road cycling, cross-country skiing, hiking and camping with his wife, Cindy, and their various cats and dogs.

Ralph previously worked as medical director of the Navajo Health Foundation. Ralph loves obstetrical care, diabetes and other endocrine issues, as well as medical ethics. He and his wife are avid readers and enjoy lots of outdoor activities or relaxing at their cabin. He is also a competitive race walker.

Bob started in the Navy, doing his internship and becoming an Undersea Medical Officer and Deep Sea Diver. After four years at the Naval Submarine Medical Research Lab he decided to go inland and complete his residency at Cascades East Family Medicine. His medical interests include lots of procedures and endoscopy of almost any orifice. He enjoys camping and skiing with his wife and two rambunctious kids, and makes great barbecue and beer.

Heidi is originally from the Midwest, mainly Michigan and Chicago. She moved to California in 2001 to pursue her doctorate in psychology. Her clinical interests include: health behavior change, resident teaching, psychosocial aspects of illness and disability and family systems approaches to psychotherapy.
In her free time, Heidi enjoys going for long walks, spending time with her husband and daughter and hanging out with her Labrador retrievers Beacon and Tiffany.

Janey is an expert in recognition and examination of child abuse, and is the medical director of the Child Abuse Response Examiners (CARES). She also has extensive experience in colposcopy and supervises the residency colpo clinic. Janey enjoys spending time with her three daughters, and trying to make sure her husband, Rob Ross, doesn't break any more bones.

Robert is a native of Kentucky, and has lived there most of his life. He was drawn to Klamath Falls when his wife Gosha began her residency here at Cascades East. Robert is particularly interested in the areas where pediatrics and child psychiatry overlap, such as developmental difficulties and problems of early childhood, as well as adolescent medicine. Currently, he practices pediatrics in a private clinic; practices child psychiatry at the Klamath Youth Development Center; goes with residents to the local juvenile detention center for an Adolescent Medicine clinic; and works with residents at Cascades East. As much as possible he and his wife spend time with their two children, and are both very interested in languages, travel and the arts.

Dwight grew up a missionary kid in Nigeria, West Africa. After medical school, he practiced rural Family Medicine in Washington and Nevada. He was then drawn to teaching and taught in Tacoma, WA and Stockton CA, before he helped start the Alaska Family Medicine Residency Program. He spent 13 years teaching residents there before coming to Cascades East. His family, including 3 young children, was drawn to the rural farming atmosphere of Klamath Falls. In his spare time Dwight enjoys collecting rocks and minerals, nature photography, mountain biking, backpacking, cross country skiing, sea kayaking, river rafting or any other adventures in the wilderness.
Medically, Dr. Smith enjoys teaching procedures, wilderness medicine, obstetrics, emergency care, and rural/frontier medicine. He also appreciates the value of integrating spiritual care into his practice. He is an Advisory Faculty with ALSO. He has lectured internationally on rural health and obstetrics and ALSO.

Nellie was born and raised in Northern Wisconsin. She completed college and medical school in Wisconsin and decided to move West for a change. Nellie completed residency here in Klamath Falls and liked it so much that she decided to stay on as faculty. She coordinates the medical student rotations and holds weekly beer rounds at the local brew pub. Her medical interests include women's/reproductive health, preventive care and infectious disease. Her favorite past-times are hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, reading and entertaining her dog, Murphy.

R. Rand Hale, MD
Dr. Hale, Klamath Falls, attended
the University of Puget Sound,
where he received a B.S. in
Biology with Department Honors
in 1972. He graduated from the
University of Washington School
of Medicine in 1977, after which
he migrated from the eternally
rain-filled skies of Seattle to
Tucson, Arizona. Following completion
of his residency in family
practice at the Arizona Health
Science Center, Dr. Hale relocated to
Klamath Falls, where he has a
solo practice. In his spare time,
Dr. Hale plays piano and enjoys
gardening, skiing and spending
time with his family.
Mark Kochevar, MD
Dr. Kochevar, Klamath Falls, graduated
from medical school at
Colorado University and trained at
Rockford Memorial Hospital. He
began a solo practice in 1956 in
Klamath Falls and became a
partner in the Klamath Medical
Clinic in 1958. Dr. Kochevar is a
member of the Klamath County
Medical Society and Flying
Physicians Association and he is
currently a Senior Aviation
Medical Examiner. He also served
as a trustee of OMA, alternate delegate
of the AMA and chairman
of the board of Pacific Health and
Life. Dr. Kochevar is a graduated
gemologist, a goldsmith and a
master gemologist appraiser.
James Novak, MD
Dr. Novak, Klamath Falls, was
raised in Klamath Falls and
returned to practice medicine. He
received his B.S. from the
University of San Francisco and
his MD from the University of
Oregon Medical School (OHSU) in
1970. After his postgraduate
training at Hennepin County
General Hospital in Minneapolis,
Minnesota, he returned to Klamath
Falls to direct the emergency
room at Sky Lakes Medical Center Medical
Center before going into private
practice at the Klamath Medical
Clinic. Dr. Novak was the 1997-98
president of the Oregon Academy
of Family Physicians. He is also
involved in Rotary International
and Boy Scouts. Leisure activities
include sailing, winemaking, fly-fishing
and skiing.
