Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS)

We have partnered with the Oregon Institute of Technology's ultrasonography tech programs to train our residents and faculty in Point of Care Ultrasound.  This is a newly developing field and we are proud to say that we are helping push family medicine into the fold.

We have monthly trainings with OIT's instructors who teach on topics as diverse as trauma assessment, bedside echo, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening,  soft tissue and abscess evaluation, and obstetrical skills.  We have an optional "Cascades East Point of Care Ultrasound Certificate" that is more rigorous than what is currently required of ER residents.  In our third year we devote an entire rotation to Pediatric ER and ultrasonography skills, and perhaps most excitingly we have our own handheld ultrasound that your upper levels will bring on hospital rounds in order to facilitate "ultrasonography rounds."

Finally, we are actively studying the effects of our in-house training program of resident comfort and competency, so by participating you will help push the whole of family medicine towards Point of Care competency.

If you like being on the cutting edge and pushing your field forwards, POCUS is one of the most exciting opportunities in primary care.
